On Saturday 3rd December Peterborough Liberal Jewish Community (PLJC) hosted a fantastic special service to celebrate the 25th anniversary of affiliating the city’s Community to Liberal Judaism (LJ).
We were fortunate to have LJ’s Senior Rabbi and Chief Executive, Danny Rich, to lead a packed congregation. Invited guests from local civic and faith organisations included Nav Malik, Assistant Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire, Jawaid Khan, Peterborough City Council Community Cohesion Manager and representatives of Peterborough Interfaith communities including Jaspal Singh, Chair PIFC, Mohammad A. Choudhary, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Peterborough and other friends from the Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and Christian faiths, including our venue hosts, the Quakers.
Also alongside Community members, families and friends, were the Chair of LJ, Simon Benscher, National Officer Ruth Seager, and representatives from LJ communities in Leicester, Norwich, York, Woodford and LJS.
For many attendees it was an interesting ‘first’, and Rabbi Danny explained the origin and significance of the various aspects of the traditional Sabbath service as he went along. Everyone then enjoyed a range of traditional Jewish foods, while making the most of the opportunity to learn something new, enjoy some enquiring conversations and make new connections.
‘As a small Community, it was a wonderful opportunity for us to build on our commitment to Interfaith partnerships in the city, and strengthen our links with other LJ communities in the region. We also plan to take part in and host more activities and continue to raise the profile of the PLJC. We hope that anyone locally who identifies as Jewish, but isn’t currently connected with a Community for whatever reason, will get in touch when they see that there is a friendly, welcoming, modern Community here in the Peterborough.’ said PLJC’s Communications Officer, Di Nicholas
We hope the Community continues to grow over the next 25 years and to be celebrating our 50th Year in our own synagogue!
The next PLJC event in December will be a Chanukah Party on Friday 30th December.
PLJC currently meet for a Shabbat service on the 1st Saturday of each month. For more information of that and other events, check the this website, email firstname.lastname@example.org, phone 07561 331390, or look on the Community Facebook page.
